Rugged digital cameras are built to last and that means that every single dollar is worth it, providing that the specifications are good enough for your preferences.  Rugged cameras usually aim on keeping the dust away from the sensitive components so they can be used more without images deteriorating in quality.  This means that you can get a camera that has an average lens, but stays average all throughout without the need of taking trips to a shop for repairs.

Better models may even have water resistance and are often backed up with some outstanding features to make it more like a DSLR camera.  Some DSLR cameras are not very rugged, so getting a slightly lesser quality that is more protected may be worth your budget.  Not only are these rugged cameras safe from drops and other harsh elements, but they also may be more comfortable to use for frequent photographers.
